General Lemuel C. Shepherd, Jr.


General Lemuel C. Shepherd, Jr., 20th Commandant of the Marine Corps, was the first charter member of the MCRD Museum Historical Society. He was born on February 10, 1896 and was commissioned a second lieutenant on April 11, 1917. His first assignment was with the 5th Marines in France. General Shepherd was appointed Commandant on January 1, 1952; he was the first Commandant to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Lemuel Cornick Shepherd, Jr. (February 10, 1896–August 6, 1990) was a four-star general of the United States Marine Corps. A veteran of World War I, World War II, and the Korean War, he was the 20th Commandant of the Marine Corps.
